Beginner's Guide to CLP-Compliant Product Labels
Whether you're a small business or exploring the idea of starting your own candle store, it’s crucial to stay updated on CLP requirements to avoid legal issues. We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of these requirements, complete with an example of a full CLP label following European regulations.
You can also download CLP information directly from our website, making it easy to ensure all data is accurate. Remember, selling products in Europe without CLP compliance is not permitted.
Key Elements of a CLP-Compliant Label:
1. Product Identifier.
Place the product name and, optionally, the batch number and SKU at the top of the label. This should be the first information visible.
Example: LilyFlower Scented Candle, 19129238438490 - SCLF
2. Allergen Information.
This section lists all product hazard data related to allergens. Regulations allow up to four hazards unless more are necessary due to severe hazards.
3. Signal Word.
Indicates the severity of the hazard.
Use "Danger" for severe hazards and "Warning" for less severe ones.
4. Hazard & Precautionary Statements.
The longest part of the label, detailing hazards and their severity, along with precautionary measures to minimise risks to health and the environment.
Example: It may cause an allergic reaction. Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
5. Hazard Pictograms.
Pictograms must be diamond-shaped, with a black symbol on a white background and a red border.
Each pictogram should cover at least 1/15th of the label's surface area, with a minimum size of 1 square centimetre. The size should be no less than 2cm x 2cm for limited quantities.
6. Supplier Address & Phone Number.
Include the company name, full address, and phone number for customer contact.
Example: Fake Company Inc., 123 Madeup Street, London, FK10 PC2, (+44) 12345678910
Additional Notes:
Ensure the CLP label is legible and clearly readable horizontally when the product is in its normal position.
It’s crucial to ensure all data on the CLP label is accurate and unique to each product to comply with liability regulations.
